Welcome to the surgical weight loss program here at UH Geauga Medical Center!  We are the only hospital in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties to offer a surgical Bariatric program!  

The Center for Bariatric Surgery can help meet the need for effective, long-lasting weight loss for obese individuals when diet and exercise alone are not enough.

Obesity is a life-threatening and life-long, costly and progressive, multi-faceted disease of excess fat storage. 

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of obesity. This includes state-of-the-art surgical options which can be performed on a minimally-invasive basis:

• Gastric Bypass – a small pouch is created and attached to the bowel so food intake is decreased and the nutritional absorption rate is altered.

• Laparoscopic Gastric Band (Lap-Band®) – an adjustable silicone band is inserted around the top of the stomach so food intake is restricted in the small pouch that remains.

In addition to sustained weight loss, bariatric surgery has been shown to help reduce the risk of other health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
